THE COMMOTION IN the great hall was so widespread it drew even Almasyâs curiosity, though she hung back while Gravis moved to question the men at the head of the column. âGregg, give me a report! Whatâs the meaning of this?â
Gregg gave his usual obliging nod. âThieves, Captain. Down in the city. Guardswoman Bridger rounded them up.â
âItâs the middle of the night,â Gravis said. âThievery is a minor crime; theyâre to be housed in a cell until tomorrowâs judgment. Bridger knows this. What is she doing?â
Gregg shrugged. âThere was blood spilled in the streets, Captain. The blood of her ladyshipâs guards, as well as civilians. Guardsman Bridger thought she would want to be told immediately.â
Gravis caught his breath. âDo you know how many were attacked? Was anyone killed?â
âThere have been five reported deaths so far, Captain, and Guardsman Halley was seriously wounded. Guardswoman Bridger is helping him toââ
âDent? Is he here? How was he wounded?â Gravis was already wading through the crowd; if Dent was with Bridger, he could just look for her head inevitably poking above everyone elseâs.
Sure enough, he spotted her, and made his way to Dentâs side; he had what looked like a bedsheet wrapped around his arm. âDent, are you all right? Gregg says you apprehended some thieves.â
âIâm fine,â Dent said, for what was surely the dozenth time, âand itâs Bridger who apprehended them, while I flopped about bleeding.â He kept struggling with the sheet, and winced as his tugging aggravated the still-unseen wound. âBridger, we have to make sure her ladyshipââ
âIs that them?â Gravis asked, as two men came into view behind them, hands bound behind their backs. They were both young and dark-haired, though oneâs was much longer than the otherâs. The long-haired one looked calm, almost resigned, but the other was palpably nervous, eyes darting every which way.
âTheyâre talented swordsmen,â Bridger said, nodding toward the long-haired one. âThat one especially. Strange, though.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âThey seemed prepared to kill Guardsman Halley, but not me,â Bridger said. âThose they attacked at the scene of their initial crime were all slain, but the rest received superficial wounds, designed to restrict movement rather than to kill.â She glanced back at Dent. âGuardsman Halley, her ladyship is here. What would you have me do?â
Gravis looked up, and saw that it was true; Lady Margraine had entered the hall, calmly surveying the commotion. âBridger, where are you? Iâm told you have the heart of this tale.â
Bridger hesitated a moment, still looking to Dent, but she must have realized there wasnât time to confer with him. She stepped forward, her stature easily drawing eyes. âJill Bridger, from down in the city, your ladyship. Your pardons for disturbing your rest.â
âYes, I know who you are, and I donât care about my rest,â the marquise said. âJust give me the point.â
âPerhaps Guardsman Halley might assist me in the beginning of it,â Bridger said, âbut I am the one who ordered these two men brought before you.â She indicated the culprits with a wave of her hand.
